Kane County Friends of the Night Sky Program is Growing!
SVO’s Friends of the Night Sky Program was featured in the May/June
Spotlight at Utah State University’s Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative.
This innovative program is helping Kanab-area businesses preserve our
amazingly dark skies by advising them on dark-sky friendly outdoor lighting.
Participating businesses undergo a lighting inventory conducted by an SVO
representative to identify ways they can improve their outdoor lighting. Once
at least 60% of the business’ exterior fixtures are dark sky friendly, the
business receives a window decal to display (similar to Yelp or TripAdvisor
stickers) and is listed in a Friends of the Night Sky business directory on the
SVO website.
The ultimate goal of the program is to engage area business owners in
helping to preserve and restore the visibility of our starry night skies by
increasing public awareness in the community.
Participating businesses include campgrounds, hotels, guiding companies,
restaurants and shops. Nine Kanab area businesses have joined so far, and
several more are in the process. Please use our business directory to
support them!
