2025 4-H Space Camp Roundup
On May 28th, the local 4-H chapter held an all-day space camp event, and
66 kids participated! SVO’s Eric Sims was there to teach about asteroids,
meteors, and craters. In a hands-on activity, kids experimented with
dropping rocks into flour and cocoa powder to see how craters form and can
be affected by the shape, angle, and speed of the asteroid or meteor. It was
super messy, which is the kind of science that kids love best, right?
After making their own craters, the kids looked at a world map and guessed
where the asteroid was that ultimately killed the dinosaurs. Do you know
where it was? …Mexico! To learn more, just look up Chicxulub crater –
Wikipedia.
The big finale was a not-quite-to-scale re-enactment of the asteroid impact,
complete with a kiddie pool, unlucky plastic dinosaurs and a bowling ball
standing in for the 6+ mile long asteroid. The kids loved it! Watch for the
little boy that runs in from the left side of the frame at the end of the
animated GIF on the bottom. He was so excited.
