What is Kane County Friends of the Night Sky?

Kane County Friends of the Night Sky, a free voluntary community program of Stellar Vista Observatory, assists Kane County business owners in showcasing their commitment to preserving the beauty of our starry night skies. Business owners who install dark sky friendly exterior lighting receive a window sticker and a listing in SVO’s online directory, showing customers they care about keeping the stars shining bright over Kane County. Dark sky friendly lighting increases security, enhances public safety, saves money, and helps wildlife.

Why Join?

  • Show You Care – Demonstrate your support for preserving Kane County’s starry nights.
  • Attract Customers – Appeal to local residents and visitors who value a star-filled night sky.
  • Lead by Example – Encourage other business owners to improve their nighttime lighting.

How to Join?

Contact Stellar Vista Observatory (info below) to schedule a visit. SVO will conduct a lighting inventory at your business location to assist in identifying fixtures and methods to help you preserve the visibility of the stars. When 60% of your outdoor lighting is night sky friendly, your business will receive SVO’s Kane County Friends of the Night Sky sticker and a Stellar Vista Observatory directory listing.

What Does Dark Sky Friendly Lighting Look Like?

They look like normal lights! In fact, you have probably seen them many times and without realizing. Here are some great examples of fixtures and signs around Kanab. Honey’s Marketplace and Rocking V Cafe use fully shielded gooseneck fixtures with warm bulbs to light their signs from above, and Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile and Comfort Suites are both excellent examples of signs which are lit from the interior and have an opaque background and light shining through the lettering and logo.
